You parked legally on West 86th overnight. Then the posted street-cleaning window started while you slept, and the curb was empty when you came downstairs. An alternate side parking tow in NYC is the city pulling that car off a public street so sanitation, or emergency access, can reach the gutter. Quick Tow NYC did not take it.

What alternate-side actually triggers

Alternate-side parking is the city’s street-cleaning curb rule. The sign names a side of the street, the days, and the hours you cannot park there. Those posted hours are the rule for that stretch. This page is not the live daily calendar, so confirm today’s status on the city parking and towing help portal before you leave the car.

ASP stays in force unless the city has suspended it. The pattern this site can state is listed holidays and weather emergencies. After an OEM-declared snow emergency, the city can suspend ASP while that emergency is on, then bring the rule back so crews can clear the curb lane. There is no current snow-route system to follow. Read the sign on your block. Then check the city’s suspension calendar.

A ticket is the common hit. City reporting put the ASP fine at $65, with about 1.9 million ASP tickets in 11 months of FY2023, per nyc.streetsblog and nyc.gov DOT. Confirm the live fine on the city’s pages before you pay. A tow is the next step when the car is blocking cleaning or emergency access. It is not the automatic result of every ticket.

We could not confirm a citywide grace period from the sources this page is allowed to cite. Treat the posted start time as the start. We also could not confirm one citywide “once a week versus twice a week” rule. The sign on your stretch of Columbus, Broadway, or a side street in Washington Heights is the rule that applies to that curb.

Overnight guests get caught here because the car was legal at 11 p.m. The next morning’s window is a different rule. Sitting in the car does not make an illegal stop legal. If you cannot be there to move it, a dead battery or a flat does not pause the clock.

Street cleaning versus a parking-violation pound tow

New York City is one towing jurisdiction. Your question still turns on which of three regimes took the car.

An NYPD parking-violation tow is the default when a car comes off a public street for a parking violation. Alternate-side and street-cleaning tows sit in this bucket. Published NYPD release fees are $185 under 8,000 lbs and $370 at or above, plus $20 a night in storage, with a 10-day reclaim window, per the NYPD towed vehicles page. Confirm those figures on that page before you pay.

A DCWP-regulated private-property or driveway tow is a different job. That path is a licensed operator, a $125 cap for removal plus the first three days, $15 a day after, and a $62.50 drop fee if you get back before the car leaves, under NYC Admin Code 19-169.1. Storage has to be in the city and within 10 miles of the removal point. See the DCWP towing consumer page. An ASP curb on Amsterdam Avenue is not this.

An accident or rotation tow, DARP or ROTOW, is the third path. That is police-directed after a crash, with its own DCWP caps. It is not street cleaning.

A fourth path is not a tow at all. The city sometimes relocates a vehicle. Use the city’s towed-vehicle lookup before you file a stolen-car report.

A no-standing zone on a public street is still a parking rule. NYPD can tow for parking violations, including hydrant, crosswalk, and signal setbacks under VTL § 1202. Do not blur that with a private-lot hookup.

Unpaid ASP tickets can stack. Finance can boot at $350 or more in default-judgment parking or camera tickets, then tow if unpaid 48 hours after the boot, and tow immediately at $2,500 or more, or for invalid registration or a public-safety issue. If registration is part of the story, read what happens when a car is towed for expired registration.

Neighborhoods where overnight sweeps hit hardest

The Upper West Side is the pattern people picture. Brownstones. A posted ASP sign. Side streets off Columbus, Amsterdam, Broadway, and Riverside Drive. Overnight guests park at 11 p.m. and wake up to an empty curb because they never read the next morning’s hours.

Park Slope works the same way on the numbered streets between Prospect Park West and the avenues. Seventh Avenue commercial blocks mix street-cleaning hours with no-standing and loading rules. Read every sign on the stretch, not only the pole by your bumper. City traffic rules can work with one sign per block. Walk the whole side. Check the arrows. A temporary construction or filming notice can change the hours for a stated window.

Astoria’s 30th Avenue and the residential cuts off Steinway fill early. Overnight airport runs toward LaGuardia leave cars on the wrong side for a morning sweep. Washington Heights, along St. Nicholas, Fort Washington, and Broadway, has the same posted ASP hours and the same NYPD pound path. A car taken off a Heights curb is not in a Manhattan pound you can drive to by guessing. There is no confirmed dedicated Manhattan pound address on the sources this site may use. Use the lookup.

Dense curb parking is why these neighborhoods see the overnight-into-morning hits. One legal overnight spot can sit on a Tuesday cleaning side. The other side of the same street is often a different day. Staten Island is in the five boroughs we serve. We still cannot name a Staten Island pound. If the car vanished there, the lookup is the step, not a guessed yard.

How to find the car after an ASP tow

Start with the city’s towed-vehicle lookup, not a group chat and not a random yard. Our walkthrough is how to find your towed car in NYC. Use the city parking and towing help portal if you need the city’s own path.

If NYPD took it for a parking violation, it goes to a borough pound. The published lots are:

Bronx pound, 2444 Exterior Street, Bronx 10468. Hours Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Brooklyn Navy Yard pound, entrance at Sands Street and Navy Street. Open continuously from 7 a.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Sunday.

Queens / College Point pound, 31-22 College Point Boulevard, Flushing 11354. Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Do not assume a Manhattan address. Do not assume a Staten Island lot. If the lookup is blank, wait and search again, then use the city’s help portal. A relocation is still possible.

Bring a valid driver’s license, current registration, and a current insurance card. If you are not the owner, you need a notarized authorization letter. Pay with cash or a card in the retriever’s name. Those document rules are from nyc.gov. Confirm them on the NYPD towed-vehicles page before you go. A missing paper is a wasted trip across the RFK Bridge or the BQE.

Property Clerk pounds at Erie Basin, 700 Columbia Street in Brooklyn, and Springfield Gardens, 174-20 North Boundary Road, are for arrests and investigations, not street-cleaning tows. Do not start there for an ASP job.

Fees and reclaim: confirm the live city schedule

For an NYPD parking-violation pound tow, the published release fee is $185 under 8,000 lbs and $370 at 8,000 lbs and over, plus $20 a night, with reclaim within 10 days. Cite and confirm that schedule on the NYPD towed vehicles page before you pay. Storage adds up overnight. Do not treat this page as the cashier’s screen.

Those dollar figures are the city’s published pound fees. They are not a Quick Tow NYC price. We publish no brand rate. Any work we dispatch is quoted before dispatch. For how the three city regimes cap what operators and pounds can charge, read whether towing fees are regulated in NYC.

The $65 ASP fine is a parking ticket, not the pound bill. You can owe both. Unpaid default-judgment tickets can move you onto the boot-and-tow path described above. Confirm boot and judgment status with NYC Finance, not with a yard rumor.

Get the car out inside the 10-day reclaim window. What happens after that window is a different city process. Do not guess a sale date or a daily penalty beyond the published $20 a night. If the car will not start at the pound, that is a separate dispatch, quoted before anyone rolls.

When to call us

If you cannot move the car before the posted street-cleaning window, this stops being a do-it-yourself job: call us at (929) 356-7857 for emergency towing. The line is answered around the clock, a notice plays that the call is recorded, and we match you with an independent local operator whose price is quoted before dispatch. We do not own trucks, we do not perform the work, and we are not a DCWP-licensed towing operator.
